Tippett String Quartet No 2 (1941-42)
Beethoven String Quartet No 13 Op 130
As a student in London in the 1920s Michael Tippett was obsessed with the music of Beethoven, particularly the string quartets. In this programme the Sacconi Quartet juxtaposes Tippett’s Second Quartet with Beethoven’s last quartet (No 13 Op 130), with the Grosse Fuge finale The fifth movement is the great Cavatina, which Beethoven said he had composed 'truly in the tears of melancholy'.
